Aug. 29, 2024 – Diamondhead resident John Brdecka was named Hancock County’s 2024 Citizen of the Year this evening. The announcement was made at the Hancock Chamber of Commerce’s Salute to Business & Industry Awards Gala in front of a sellout crowd. Brdecka was elected by members of the Hancock Chamber of Commerce.

John and his family moved to Hancock County in the fall of 2021 from the Chicagoland area after accepting the position of Executive Director for the Hancock County Library System. In this role, he oversees all functions of the Library System including preparing and overseeing the budget, developing policies, strategic planning, and public and governmental relations. John spent most of his career at Northwestern University Libraries working his way up to Interim Associate University Librarian for Resource Delivery & Management. He is a graduate of Leadership Hancock Class of 2022. He has joined the Leadership Steering Committee and the Chamber’s Education Committee. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Bay St. Louis and projected Club President for 2026/27. John and his wife, Brittni are also CASA Advocates for CASA of Hancock County. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Illinois State University and a master’s degree in library and information science from Dominican University. He has also received Certificates from Harvard’s Graduate School of

Education and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
